Announcing the
fifth Harpley Hunt audience-participation art event!
It's not quite HARPG, as there's no competitive element - no need to outdo eachother or worry you're not good enough to compete, it's more just a bit of fun to give everyone a chance to take part and draw a little something to contribute to the day's sport together. Absolutely
no limits on style or skill level - all entries will be welcomed, and shared in a Journal post on Boxing Day, so we can all enjoy one another's art and horses.
So, what do we draw?
Hunting scenes, simple as that! Your picture(s) can include any number of horses, riders, or hounds, in any combination - you don't have to show
any of our hounds if you're happier drawing horses. Pictures of happenings before or after the hunt itself, or just standing about while dressed the part, are just as welcome as action scenes of jumps and gallops.
No limit on how many characters
or drawings can be entered in the hunt (you can show the same horse and rider as many times as you like, or lots of different ones!)
Do we have to write a roleplay-scene/story to go with it?
Only if you'd like to
Totally up to you, if you enjoy writing these then by all means go ahead, but a single-line caption is fine too. I want this to be open to HARPG regulars
and those who've never even heard of that and just like drawing horses
What's it like round there?
The Harpley Hunt's country is mostly flat, with wide open skies, some gentle sloping hills, and solid well-drained ground which holds up well under foot. Mixed farmland, with some grazing land, and a lot of crop fields which have good wide verges making ideal long smooth tracks for galloping!
(I will just add that my own story is set in the 1910s, and therefore there aren't any modern buildings, cars, electricity pylons, etc, in the countryside around the farms, houses, and villages my characters inhabit
)
The weather on the day will be bitterly cold, crisp, and very frosty, with some fog early which lifts by lunchtime, so you can either draw it misty or clearer, depending on what you fancy.
The jumping is mostly over hawthorn hedges, with the occasional watery (icy!) ditch, fallen log, or post-and-wire fence - and plenty of gates and gaps for those who don't want the jumps. No stone walls or constructed XC style palisade jumps round here
The hounds, if you'd like to include them, are a mixed bag of various colours, as in
this photograph I caught at Burghley one year.
What should they wear?
Turnout rules for hunting can be found online for the real thing, please do try to make sure everything your people and horses are wearing is correct for a formal hunt meet - particularly that the turnout is plain, traditional, and workmanlike -
please no garishly coloured accessories, flashy/casual clothes, or overly blingy bridles!
As a P.S. to this bit, a note on coat colours! Please don't send your riders along in hunting pink (red) coats, although the colour is iconic for hunting they're not for every one who goes out to ride with a hunt, but strictly for certain hunt staff only - the staff are my characters and no matter how nicely yours ask, they can't take the place of the men and women who already have those jobs! We have to imagine your characters are travelling in to Harpley country from your various locations specifically for this meet, so they're not hunt staff when riding with us
How do we enter?
Once you've finished your artwork(s), just post it to your own DA gallery, and let me know it's there - either by tagging my username in your caption, sending me a note, or leaving a comment on this post. You can upload them at
any point between now and Boxing Day, no need to sit on them til the day itself!
Please make sure everything is entered by 6pm on the 26th of December, so I can get them all gathered up and shared on the day of the hunt! Late entries
can be edited in later, no problem, so don't panic if you're running late or having difficulties, but your pictures might not get seen by everybody if they're added afterwards.
Can we win anything?
As with real hunting, there isn't a 'winner' or prizes, it's the taking part that counts - and whether that means your riders want to be right up the front of things, or happily tottering along at the back at their own speed, that's just fine. There will, however, be a few awards and mentions up for grabs, certain features -
not all the same as last time! - which I'll be secretly keeping an eye on and rewarding on the day (with digital rosettes, not cash prizes, sorry XD )
Any questions, just ask below!
