Once again we don't have very many entries for this year's Hunt, but every single one is appreciated so I'll begin the post with a thank you to each of you who took part!

This event, like real hunting, is never run as a competition, so there's no ranked placings and a winner, but as usual you can still gain a ribbon or two - every time I pick out a few secret categories to reward, so you might find a little rosette pinned beside your entry, you can save them, or edit a thumbnail/link to them into your drawing's description if you wish :) (Smile)

So, let's take a look at all the horses, ponies and intrepid riders who braved the chilly wet weather and rode with the Harpley this year. Each picture is a thumbnail which clicks through to full size, please do take a few moments to look at everybody's art up close, they're really worth it, and leave the artists some comments if you'd like to.

First, my own contributions, this year I have three separate pictures to share...

The Harpley Hunt - Mr and Mrs Grey by oingy-boingy
'Mr and Mrs Grey' - it's not hard to see where Amyas gets his horsemanship skills and love of speed in the saddle, when his parents Samson and Hilda love nothing more than a brisk blast along at a gallop!

The Harpley Hunt - If You Can Ride an Exmoor... by oingy-boingy
'If You Can Ride an Exmoor...' you can ride anything! What my hunting cast of characters needed most, a small spirited pony who could keep up with the best of them, and a rider well on his way to doing the same - Henry Wyatt and Hawk Moth fill this gap beautifully!

The Harpley Hunt - The Absentee by oingy-boingy
'The Absentee' - Aubrey's mount for the day, Admiralty, lacking only Aubrey, who hasn't turned up.

And now, the entries from the artists who sent horses along to join the Harpley...

Harpley 2018/ 1918/1818? by Louvan Rosette - Best Turned Out by oingy-boingy
'Harpley 2018/1918/1818?' by Louvan
Great to have an appearance by Gareth, and the even more famous (or infamous!) Meredith, looking easily capable of tackling the Harpley's countryside and seemingly enjoying every minute of it. Gareth gets the rosette for Best Turned Out, not only is he looking remarkably smart, and correctly dressed, but every rider in the field will be thankful of that warning red ribbon in the wilful welsh cob's tail!

Dashing through the Mud by Spotted-Tabby-Cat Rosette - Horse the judge would most like to ride by oingy-boingy
'Dashing through the mud' by Spotted-Tabby-Cat
Another small fluffy pony joining the hunt this year, a brilliantly fluffy shetland in a lovely palomino colour, having a whale of a time, mud or no mud! This one takes the rosette for Judge's Favourite (officially Horse the judge would most like to ride, except in this case I'd just like to give it a pat and a cuddle as I'm a bit big for sitting on a shetland :D )

And finally, the hunt's first ever collaboration picture!
The Harpley Hunt 2018 by sobreiros Rosette - Best scenery by oingy-boingy Rosette - Most atmospheric by oingy-boingy
'The Harpley Hunt 2018' by sobreiros and ofcowardiceandkings
Two intrepid riders and their beautifully drawn mounts, making light work of a hefty fallen tree, each with an action-packed jump pose full of power and bounce! Co-incidentally you get not one but two rosettes for this piece, Best Scenery for the wonderfully wintery looking background and that detailed bark on the log, and also Most Atmospheric, for capturing the thrill of riding out in company, the social side of hunting we can often miss by concentrating on a single horse and rider.

Again, thanks to all of you for taking part, and sending in your pictures for everyone to enjoy. It's only a shame there weren't a few more, so I think I'll rest the hunt's usual St George's Day meet, and run something for the autumn instead - giving it a change of season and theme might encourage a few more people to have a go and send some riders out with us next time!

As December is suddenly upon us, it's time to announce the sixth Harpley Hunt audience-participation art event!
It's not quite HARPG, as there's no competitive element - no need to outdo eachother or worry you're not good enough to compete, it's more just a bit of fun to give everyone a chance to take part and draw a little something to contribute to the day's sport together. Absolutely no limits on style or skill level - all entries will be welcomed, and shared in a Journal post on Boxing Day, so we can all enjoy one another's art and horses.

So, what do we draw?
Hunting scenes, simple as that! Your picture(s) can include any number of horses, riders, or hounds, in any combination - you don't have to show any of our hounds if you're happier drawing horses. Pictures of happenings before or after the hunt itself, or just standing about while dressed the part, are just as welcome as action scenes of jumps and gallops.
No limit on how many characters or drawings can be entered in the hunt (you can show the same horse and rider as many times as you like, or lots of different ones!)

Do we have to write a roleplay-scene/story to go with it?
Only if you'd like to :) (Smile) Totally up to you, if you enjoy writing these then by all means go ahead, but a single-line caption is fine too. I want this to be open to HARPG regulars and those who've never even heard of that and just like drawing horses :D (Big Grin)

What's it like round there?
The Harpley Hunt's country is mostly flat, with wide open skies, some gentle sloping hills, and solid well-drained ground which holds up well under foot. Mixed farmland, with some grazing land, and a lot of crop fields which have good wide verges making ideal long smooth tracks for galloping!
(I will just add that my own story is set in the 1910s, and therefore there aren't any modern buildings, cars, electricity pylons, etc, in the countryside around the farms, houses, and villages my characters inhabit ;) (Wink) )

The weather on the day will be grey and overcast, a little mist early settling to drizzly rain, but nothing too disasterous - your horses and riders might feel a bit damp and will definitely end up muddy, but they won't get a soaking - unless they come off into water!
The jumping is mostly over hawthorn hedges, with the occasional watery ditch, fallen log, or post-and-wire fence - and plenty of gates and gaps for those who don't want the jumps. No stone walls or constructed XC style palisade jumps round here ;) (Wink)
The hounds, if you'd like to include them, are a mixed bag of various colours, as in this photograph I caught at Burghley one year.

What should they wear?
Turnout rules for hunting can be found online for the real thing, please do try to make sure everything your people and horses are wearing is correct for a formal hunt meet - particularly that the turnout is plain, traditional, and workmanlike - please no garishly coloured accessories, flashy/casual clothes, or overly blingy bridles!
As a P.S. to this bit, a note on coat colours!
Please don't send your riders along in hunting pink (red) coats, although the colour is iconic for hunting they're not for every one who goes out to ride with a hunt, but strictly for certain hunt staff only - the staff are my characters and no matter how nicely yours ask, they can't take the place of the men and women who already have those jobs! We have to imagine your characters are travelling in to Harpley country from your various locations specifically for this meet, so they're not hunt staff when riding with us ;) (Wink)

How do we enter?
Once you've finished your artwork(s), just post it to your own DA gallery, and let me know it's there - either by tagging my username in your caption, sending me a note, or leaving a comment on this post. You can upload them at any point between now and Boxing Day, no need to sit on them til the day itself!
Please make sure everything is entered by 6pm on the 26th of December, so I can get them all gathered up and shared on the day of the hunt! Late entries can be edited in later, no problem, so don't panic if you're running late or having difficulties, but your pictures might not get seen by everybody if they're added afterwards.

Can we win anything?
As with real hunting, there isn't a 'winner' or prizes, it's the taking part that counts - and whether that means your riders want to be right up the front of things, or happily tottering along at the back at their own speed, that's just fine. There will, however, be a few awards and mentions up for grabs, certain features - not all the same as last time! - which I'll be secretly keeping an eye on and rewarding on the day (with digital rosettes, not cash prizes, sorry XD )

Any questions, just ask below!

Here's my own contributions, not all the usual riders got covered this year (Aubrey sat it out on purpose because of the vile weather, Wil got stuck helping at the farm because all the water pipes and tanks and buckets had frozen solid and the animals always come first, the rest I just ran out of time for!) but I had fun doing what I did manage!

The Harpley Hunt - Through the frost and fog by oingy-boingy
"Through the Frost and Fog"
Amyas and his father Samson, taking not a bit of notice of the cold!

The Harpley Hunt - Ready to Ride by oingy-boingy
"Ready to Ride"
Young Henry Percival Wyatt all full of that distinctive mix of nerves and anticipation for his first formal hunt, along with his proud father Val, and under the careful supervision of groom, Mr Firebrace.

The Harpley Hunt - A Wild Ride by oingy-boingy
"A Wild Ride"
Iris Aston and Red Queen, making light work of some big bold leaping!

Now, the entries sent in by everyone else...

Harpley Hunt 2017 :: Before the hunt by MistyofSunrise  Rosette - Most atmospheric by oingy-boingy
"Before the hunt" by MistyofSunrise
A lovely little bit of behind-the-scenes preparation here, the temptation with hunting is always to go for action scenes or single portraits so it's very nice to see someone peeping into that pre-hunt atmosphere, and for that unusual approach, I've decided to give you the rosette for Most Amospheric :)

Harpley Hunt 2017 :: Setting out by MistyofSunrise
"Setting out" by MistyofSunrise
Three lovely trot poses from the same artist, beautifully drawn and coloured.

Rosette - Best colour horse by oingy-boingy
Untitled by desertdaydream
Two sleek and stylishly coloured appaloosa-patterned horses here, one giving its rider a much easier time of things than the other! Galahad Some Charm (on the right) wins the rosette for the most eye-catching coloured horse in the hunt this year!

Harpley Hunt Boxing Day meet - coloured by hemsbury Rosette - Best scenery by oingy-boingy
"Harpley Hunt Boxing Day meet" by hemsbury
A simply gorgeous piece, with intricate detail and soft subtle colour, and brilliantly captured horses and riders in a background thoroughly deserving of this rosette for excellent scenery!

Harpley Hunt Boxing day - Ollie trotting by hemsbury  Rosette - Best Turned Out by oingy-boingy
"Harpley Hunt Boxing day - Ollie trotting" by hemsbury
A second piece by the same artist, giving us another look at one of their horse-and-rider pairs, Ollie and Hadley win the prize for Best Turned Out with their neat workmanlike tack and correct turnout

And, squeaking in by the skin of their teeth JUST as I was ready to post this, three more horse & rider pairs!
Harpley Hunt Boxing Day Meet 2017 by oakhollowd  Rosettes Boldestjump by oingy-boingy
"Harpley Hunt Boxing Day Meet 2017" by oakhollowd
A fantastic action scene, three thrilling jumps side by side, winning you the rosette for Boldest Jump for that fearless lady on the left, who not only has the guts to ride our big Harpley hedges side-saddle, but smiles while doing it!

Once again, let me start with a huge thank you to everyone who sent in drawings for the hunt. Even though a lot of us were busy or having trouble finding time or inspiration for art, there's still a great show of entries, and all so different in style, scene, and mood. As last time, I'm really grateful to you all for taking the time to work on them, every last bit of effort is appreciated, and I'm sure all the other participants will enjoy looking through the entries just as much as I did.

The hunt is, as with the real thing, non-competitive, with no ranking of drawings or point-scoring to decide a winner, but that doesn't mean there's no prizes, as I have a few secret categories to consider as I look through the entries, and you might find a little digital ribbon pinned next to your drawing (Each one is thumbnailed to the full size copy in my scrapbook, you're welcome to save yourself a copy as a souvenir, or to post it into your picture's caption)

So, let's take a look through this year's artworks :) (Smile) Click the thumbnails to visit each drawing full size (no, really, they're all worth it!) and leave the artists comments if you like!

First, my own contributions to the hunt. Due to unforseen circumstances I didn't get all I'd hoped, done, but despite some obvious absences (Where is Amyas? what happened to Wil?) I do still have a few to show :)

The Harpley Hunt - A Long Leap by oingy-boingy
"A Long Leap"
Samson Grey and his faithful old hunter Valiant, making a brambly ditch look like nothing at all!

The Harpley Hunt - Aubrey is Over-horsed! by oingy-boingy
"Aubrey is Over-horsed!"
Mr Charlton-Fletchet is not the horseman he would have others believe, and really cannot handle a great big handful of a horse like this!

The Harpley Hunt - Loose Horse by oingy-boingy
"Loose Horse"
First time I've drawn a loose horse jumping, and of course it had to be Aubrey who let his mount get away from him!

~

Now, on to the brilliant selection of pictures sent in by everyone else...

The Harpley Hunt - St George's Day Meet - Giovanni by ElreniaGreenleaf
"The Harpley Hunt - St George's Day Meet - Giovanni" by ElreniaGreenleaf
A really gorgeous scene, full of rich detail and depth, and Giovanni is a very handsome horse!

St George's Day Hunt by PonyCool42  Rosette - Most atmospheric by oingy-boingy
"St George's Day Hunt" by PonyCool42
A brilliantly effective use of acrylics for this tiny but excellent pice of art, lovely use of light and shade and two lovely action poses for the painted horses. A rosette for the Most Atmospheric scene, this really captures the countryside and old-fashioned atmosphere of my setting without dragging your characters out of their own era!

St George's Hunt II by TheForeverKnight
"St George's Hunt II" by TheForeverKnight
Submitted as an unfinished entry, with colour updated later - some very enthusiastic and expressive ponies from this yard!

The Harpley Hunt-St George's Day .:pup galore:. by TerracottaVulture  Rosette - Horse the judge would most like to ride by oingy-boingy
"The Harpley Hunt-St George's Day .:pup galore:." by TerracottaVulture
Our first pixel art entry for the hunt, and it's spectacular! Chestnut horse OLS Gualemar has a very kind face, and his steady unflappable personality earns him this rosette for 'Horse the judge would most like to ride'!

Harpley by Ysval
"Harpley" by Ysval
A bright and vibrant scene for this pair, the simple and striking style of the background really makes the horse stand out!

In the fields at Harpley, St George's Day..... by Louvan
"In the fields at Harpley, St George's Day....." by Louvan
Great to see these familiar characters from Havillands riding with the Harpley Hunt again, looking as keen as ever to get up the exciting end of the action!

Pancake Hunting by AccaliaRose
"Pancake Hunting" by AccaliaRose
The wonderfully named Persephone's Pancakes and rider Loeta looking quite at home in Harpley country.

The Harpley Hunt St. George's Day Meet 2 by Murasaki99 Rosette - Best Turned Out by oingy-boingy
"The Harpley Hunt St. George's Day Meet 2" by Murasaki99
Another first for the Harpley Hunt meets, a brilliant comic-strip style piece full of action, personality and fun! There's a Best Turned Out rosette for riders Ralaar and Ch'an in their spotless and traditional outfits.

Harpley Hunt by narroch
"Harpley Hunt" by narroch
Another fun and lively piece, done in an impressionist style with digital brushstrokes to capture bright sunshine and a keen horse enjoying a good run.

The Harpley Hunt by CharcoalStables
"The Harpley Hunt" by CharcoalStables
The last drawing for this meet, a lovely traditional picture of Sunny Side Up and rider Levi.

Again, my thanks, to everyone who took part. And I hope you all enjoy the pictures, even if you didn't join in - there's always next time if you fancy it!
